My exhibition object is the outcome of my research on public space. I wanted to find a use for the negative space that was created by public furniture or objects. As a result I started inflating a plastic bag in the negative space, and by the end of the experiment the bag was thrown away by a rubbish bin. Suddenly I realized that garbage is a negative space that is created by people in the city.
My exhibition object is a comment on the debate on how we create negative public space and “non-space” in the city. It wants to transfer the warm and safe home environment in the cold and unfriendly negative space, created by public furniture.
For that reason it borrows features from bedroom quilts. My object gives a function to garbage and transforms the negative space into an observing point, that people can sit and think of how we have designed the public spaces in the cities.
Materials/techniques:
Quilted Tyvek and polyurethane based expanding foam.
